Baie-de-L'Isle-Verte
National Wildlife
Area
The Baie-de-L'Isle-Verte National Wildlife
Area (NWA), located in the municipality of L'Isle-Verte, has
provided protection for the most outstanding cordgrass marsh
in the St. Lawrence estuary for the past 18 years.
| Aside
from the saltwater cordgrass marsh with its many ponds and
the coastal marsh of saltmeadow cordgrass, other habitat
types can be found within the Wildlife Area, such as prairie,
scrubland and a few woodlands on upland areas. |

The
NWA has a rich diversity of flora and fauna. Nearly 130
bird species have been inventoried there, including a few
relatively rare ones. Many terrestrial and marine mammals
(including grey seals and harbour seals), amphibians, reptiles,
and many species of fish, molluscs and other invertebrates
can be observed in the sector. It is also one of the most
important Black Duck nesting areas in the estuary. In addition,
an estimated 35,000 birds stop over at Isle Verte during
the spring migration. |
The Canadian Wildlife Service acquired
one parcel of land under St. Lawrence Vision 2000, covering
a total of 32.58 hectares. Steps were also taken to clear up
some property titles and finalize pending transactions. The
National Wildlife Area has been consolidated through these efforts.
