| Protection
of this island, which is adjacent to Île de Grâce in Lac
Saint-Pierre, was considered a priority owing to pressures
from development. Although woodlands make up nearly two
thirds of its area, particularly silver maple, red ash and
black willow, the eastern part of the island is covered
by marshes containing a rich diversity of flora. Green dragon
(Ariseama dracontium), a species
likely to be designated as threatened or vulnerable, grows
on île Lapierre. The wetlands are popular spawning areas
for fish. The swampy bay has considerable potential as muskrat
habitat. Many birds nest on the island, particularly Song
Sparrows, House Wrens, and Warbling Vireos; the latter has
a limited breeding range in southern Quebec. |
