Îles Millette et Stranham
Part of a large archipelago, île Millette
and île Stranham are located on the south shore of Lac Saint-Pierre,
at the eastern end of île du Moine. The two islands feature
similar types of habitat. There is a wooded zone, composed mainly
of crack willow and silver maple, a reed canary-grass meadow
and a marsh zone dominated primarily by river bulrush. Due to
their low topographic position, the islands are inundated during
spring floods and therefore constitute highly favourable habitat
for many fish species and for muskrat. Moreover, the islands
have been designated as priority habitats under the Fish Habitat
Restoration Fund. The reed canary-grass marsh holds promise
as waterfowl habitat. Besides these natural habitats, there
are a few cottages on île Stranham.
By acquiring 13.70 hectares of this site, the Fondation de la
faune du Québec has helped to strengthen the protection accorded
to islands along this part of the St. Lawrence.
